King Olav Haraldsson II was killed in the battle of Stikelstad north of Trondheim, Norway in 1030. The battle occured as the king returned to Norway from exile in Russia. After his death, tales of miracles spread and within a year, Olav was canonised.
St. Olavs shrine in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway, soon became a significant pilgrim goal during the middle-ages.
On June 7th, a 1200 kilometer pilgrim route from Åbo, Finland by Grisslehamn, Sweden to Trondheim, Norway is being opened.
