In 2023, the Association welcomed the Haapsalu and Läänemaa Museum Foundation as a member. This marks the first Estonian entry into the network of the St. Olav Ways cultural route. The Olav legacy remains vibrant along the Estonian coastline, and the Haapsalu Museum Foundation has been actively involved in the ongoing project “From Nidaros to Novgorod: Cultures Along the Historic St. Olav Route,” which explores the Nordic-Baltic trade system from the Viking Age to the era of Hanseatic League dominance.

Among other activities, the project has initiated several archaeological excavations led by the museum director, Dr. Anton Pärn, an archaeologist. In the Saastna area, excavations have taken place at the site of a 15th-century chapel dedicated to St. Olav, which in it’s time was well-known throughout the Baltic Sea region.

A news report, complete with photos, on the excavations conducted during the summer of 2023 can be found here: https://news.err.ee/1609036571/archeologists-explore-saastna-chapel-near-matsalu-bay

The board of ACSOW are very excited to have Estonia as part of the cultural route. Currently, the main focus for our Estonian partners  is on strengthening the network of Estonian heritage sites and organizations engaged in the Olav legacy. There is also strong enthusiasm for, int future, establishing a physical pilgrim route that connects these sites along the coast and further links to the existing network of pilgrim routes to Trondheim.
